Naming Ceremony
In Ghana the Naming Ceremony is a very important part of a newborn baby's life. All
of the family and friends get together and throws a party where the baby is more or
less baptized and is officially given his or her name, making them an actual person
in their own right and not just someone's child. It is believed that the spirits
may take a baby back if it is not given a name in an official ceremony. It is a
very important part of the process of childbirth.
The baby of Happiness, the latest of the expectant mothers we helped through
childbirth, has not yet received his name. Sadly, just after he was born John in
Ghana had his own health emergency and was simply not able to do it. In the
meantime he had to go from the village where the baby was born and has been staying
in Accra. And also, because of John's illness and other emergencies we have simply
not had the extra funds to give the little baby his celebration. Certainly, a naming
ceremony is important but survival must come first.
Our goal is to get the little boy named this month. He needs his special day. He
needs to be made an official member of our community.
