"Every Charity is a Fraud"
Recently the President of P9 was told by a friend that he didn't want to discuss P9 with him because, "in my experience, every non-profit is a fraud."
This man is an African of European ancestry who lived in Africa for most of his adult life. He is presently suffering from a life-threatening disease he caught as a result of his lifestyle while he was in Africa. He would be dead now if he hadn't moved to Europe so that he could receive medical treatment at the expense of the government of the country where he is now living.
He is totally dependent upon government charity for food, housing, and the medicines that keep him alive. This from a government he has put absolutely no money into in terms of taxes or any contribution to its society because he spent his productive years in another country altogether. He also uses the extra money from his government benefits to take occasional trips for pleasure to other European countries that have less strict laws about drugs and personal behavior.
Literally the only difference between this man and one of the people we are helping in Ghana is the color of his skin.
Not everyone feels empathy. Not everyone feels compassion toward the suffering of others. Many people who see another person sick, homeless, or in rags will not care. Or even worse, they will feel annoyed that such a person is allowed to share the world with them. They hide this hatred behind the argument that the person in need is just trying to get something out of them by playing on their sympathies, of which they have none.
The greatest fear of many a man with money is that a man with no money will somehow trick him out of some of it. They would literally rather a thousand starve than that one child might get food he didn't need.
This has nothing to do with economic theories or the economic status of the person holding such beliefs. It is simply a hatred of the poor, and of those who try to help them.
In the real world not all charities are frauds any more than all members of any group are evil. You simply cannot make those kinds of broad generalizations. But while it may be true that some people who try to help others are frauds it is certainly even more true that those who refuse to help anyone are intentionally letting people suffer, and they are doing it openly and are proud of it. Who is the greatest evil, here?
Empathy is the greatest human attribute there is. Without it we are the lowest of animals. With it we build civilizations that reach for the stars.
