Destiny in Hospital
About six months ago a young woman named Happiness came to our friend John in
Ghana, pregnant and penniless and asking for help. We provided what aid we could
and her baby was born safely in a hospital in February. He has had some health
problems since then and has needed additional care, as many infants do.
But Happiness already had another son, four-year-old Destiny. Four-year-olds
sometimes need help too, and as it turns out in our concentration on the new baby
we let problems with Destiny go on longer than they should have. Happiness is very
poor and struggles to provide for herself and her children. As a result, Destiny was
diagnosed with kwashiorkor.
Kwashiorkor is a nutritional disease, and it is very dangerous. Its most obvious
symptom is a swollen belly, the traditional image of a starving child, and it can
lead to dwarfism and mental retardation. It can damage a child for life. It can be
caused not only by not eating but by eating foods that don't have the nutrition a
growing child needs.
Destiny has been in the hospital getting treatment and if everything goes as
planned he will be released tomorrow. We will try to do what we can to make certain
that he has enough food- and enough good food- to prevent this from happening
again.
Every good boy deserves favor.
