We talked about Gofred some time ago.
John found Gofred alone on the beach in Accra, where his father had left him to look for work outside of Ghana. John took him in and cared for him until his father returned to claim him. The father later took the boy to stay with people in a remote village in Ghana while he travelled about Ghana looking for work. Gofred is on of those children in Ghana who are not
quite abandoned by their parents but, due to poverty, the parents aren't really
able to care for them as any child needs to be cared for.
John hadn't mentioned Gofred for some time, though apparently, he has met with his
father from time to time in Accra. But today John informed us that the people
caring for Gofred had contacted him using a phone in a nearby village to tell him
that the child was having problems. He has been kicked out of the school he was
attending and has come down with malaria. John didn't make it clear if he had been
removed from school because of the malaria or if the two events are unrelated, but
either way the little boy is in trouble. They asked us for help.
Unfortunately, right now our resources are stretched to the limit. So many of the
children we have been helping are struggling that it is literally a question of
which ones we can help and which ones we cannot. But we will try to work something
out for Gofred. He has aways seemed such a sad little boy. It would be a shame if
he were to be the one to be forgotten.
