John Visits Melbourne Update July 26, 2024

Updated: Aug 20

Earlier this month Melbourne, a three year old Ghanaian boy, accidentally drank

some kerosene and wound up in hospital, gravely ill. Thankfully he was given the

treatment he needed and was released from the hospital after a several week stay.

A few days after Melbourne was home with Agnes, his mother, John went to their

home, in a very poor neighborhood, to check on them and see how they were doing.

Unfortunately the neighbors misunderstood why John was there. They believed that he

had come to spy on them and get them in trouble. As a result they beat John and

broke his cellphone before a local elder appeared on the scene to stop them.

We didn't hear from John for several days. He no longer had his phone to reach out

to us and also he was quite injured by the beating. We found later that he had gone

to stay with his mother until he had recovered a bit. But finally he felt well

enough to return to his house in Accra, where he managed to get in touch with us

through the computer he uses in his music work and could tell us what had happened.

John has only been back to his normal self for a day or so, now. His mood is better

and thankfully he seems to have suffered no long-term physical injuries.

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. Some of the neighborhoods in Accra are very dangerous. John is constantly trying to help people, including those who live in these unsafe neighborhoods and are simply too poor to live elsewhere. But this placed John's life at risk. It is important to make sure that nothing like this happens ever again.
