Anabel's Easter

Sad news from Ghana. A few days ago, John in Ghana let us know that Anabel, the

little orphan girl we have been supporting there, would soon need funds to pay for

her monthly lodging, food, and tuition. He said no more about it and, due to other

problems we have been dealing with, we started talking about other things and we set

Anabel aside for the time being.

Because of the time difference between the US and Ghana, John often communicates

with us during his morning hours which is the dead of night here. Last night at

about 3 AM john informed us they Anabel needed funds to pay for a school trip. This

of course, we were willing to send but he told us that she needed it that very

morning to pay for an Easter trip the care center was planning for that day.

Of course, we will always do what we can for Anabel, but this was simply impossible.

The money transfer system we use to send money to John does not deliver transfers

in the middle of the night on weekends. It is very reliable in general, but it

simply would not complete a transfer at that time of day on a weekend. So, there was

simply no way to pay for Anabel's school trip in time.

This is one of the problems with trying to deal with people living on the margins

in a small foreign country. It is to John's credit that a man who himself struggles

just to survive is willing to help others even more desperate than himself but such

a situation means that we have to use the means that are available to help, and

sometimes those means are simply unable to respond quickly or easily. We have had

this problem other times in truly life-threatening situations and it can be

harrowing. Sometimes we simply cannot respond to a need as fast as the situation

demands. Thank God it has never cost a life, but it has caused suffering as people

who are injured or seriously ill have had to wait hours or even days for the funds

to pay for their treatment.

At any rate Anabel has had to miss out on her school's Easter outing. It is sad

that she had to stay home while the other children left on their adventure but at

least she is better off than many of our other children. She will still have a

place to stay, food, and she will continue to receive her education. But it is sad

that she will be left out while the other children are having fun.
