Rita the Girl Who Fell
Some time ago a young woman named Rita came to John in Ghana with an emergency that
required immediate action. She had fallen down three flights of stairs and had a
nasty gash in her shin. John took her to a pharmacy that gives emergency
treatment where they bandaged her injury and gave her a tetanus shot. Afterward we
made certain that she got the necessary backup care and she went on her way.
Recently Rita came back to John once again asking for help. In the time since John
had helped with her injury she had become homeless and was sleeping in the beach in
Accra. She asked for help so that she could rent a room.
We provided the thirty dollars she needed, and Rita is now off the streets and
living safe from others and sheltered from the weather.
Thirty dollars is almost nothing in modern America, but it made an enormous
difference in this young woman's life. Being homeless is terrible anywhere, but in
Accra it is simply not safe to be out on the streets at night, especially for a
young woman like Rita. We have had people beaten and robbed simply because they had
no place to go after dark. Rita has other problems as well, of course, but at least
for now, she has some shelter.
Not all of our work is with illness or with children. Need comes in many forms.
