Yakabu
Yakabu is a 62 year old beggar in Accra, Ghana. Eleven years ago, he became
handicapped and his wife threw him out. He has been on the streets since then,
living on what few coins generous bypassers have seen fit to throw into his begging
bowl. He has few possessions and no room, no place to shelter him from the rains
and cold.
Makes one feel grateful for what one has, trite but true when faced with reality.
He came to John asking for help. We have been putting most of our effort into
helping children but John decided to do what he could to help ease Yakabu's
suffering. Children are often victims through no doing of their own and because of
their age they cannot do anything to help themselves, but older people often wind up
in the same circumstances. They cannot simply be cast away.
We managed to provide the funds necessary for Yakabu to rent a small room for two
months. We have helped him to buy a few things to make his life a bit easier,
including a blanket to help him stay warm. Such a simple thing we take for granted
but it can be a lifesaver to the homeless.
We are hoping we can get Yakabu into John's nanny house as soon as we can get it
finished. If he is to survive, he needs to be rescued from the streets.
