Anabel
The heavy rains in Ghana over the past month have made it difficult for us to be
able to help our friends living there. Our normal means of communication and, more
importantly, of getting actual help to people was disrupted, sometimes
seriously so. The people we work with are very dependent on mobile phones, not only
for communication but also as a means of getting funds quickly and safely from
person to person. And the rains have damaged many of their possessions, including
their phones.
This is not to say, of course, that everyone we help has a cellphone or can receive
money by that means; John often has to travel, sometimes considerable distances, to
be able to give money to people in need directly and in person. But in some cases
the funds can be transmitted directly by phone, and this has been very difficult
because of what has been happening there.
Technology is great when it works.
Anabel is a little girl who was abandoned some years ago by her mother and we have
been making it possible for her to stay in a childcare center and receive an
education in a school associated with the center. She has no one to care for her
except us and we are determined that she not become one of the many orphaned and
abandoned little children wandering the streets in Ghana struggling to survive.
The last month has been hard on her as well as on the others. John was cut off from
communication with the childcare center for a time and has only just regained
access to them. As a result, he has been unable to pay her fees but thankfully the
center has been patient with him. Fortunately, he is once again able to send funds to
them through the local mobile money system (through phone transfers) there and we
are in the process of getting her past and current dues paid.
This is something that has been weighing heavily on our hearts, we definitely do
not want anything bad to happen to the little girl who has been through such a hard
time already in her short life. But she has been safe and finally her bills are
being taken care of once more. So that is a good thing. Many thanks to all of you.
