Just a brief, happy update about little Donald in Ghana.
Donald's mother came to us about a year ago, now, asking for help. She was
pregnant, unemployed, homeless with no local family or friends to help her in her
time of need. We managed to get her admitted to hospital where her baby boy was
born in a safe, protected environment. From the very beginning the infant had
problems. He spent the first week of his life in an incubator because of breathing
problems. But finally he was released and he went home with his mother to the beach
area of Accra.
Donald has had plenty of challenges since then. He continues to have health issues,
including repeated problems breathing, and his mother remains desperately poor. If
it very hard for her to do anything to earn an income with a small baby to take
care of. Donald has struggled for all of his short life. But he has made it
through. He is now about a month from his first birthday. For the longest time it
seemed impossible that he would survive to see it, but here we are. A tough little
by and a real fighter has made it through.
The good news today is that Donald is just starting to stand on his own. Soon he
will be walking. Another triumph that may seem commonplace and no big deal, but it
is a good thing, and something to be celebrated.
It looks like the little boy may make it.
