On Monday John in Ghana had an operation to correct a condition that had been
causing him serious health problems for some time. Afterward he was so weak that
the doctors intended to keep him in hospital until Wednesday but as it turned out
they released him on Tuesday instead. He was still very weak and could barely
muster the strength to tell us he was home.
He was put on a strict diet and was told not to eat any solids. He was also given
prescriptions for drugs, some of which made him weak and sleepy.
John's home is some distance from Accra, where most of the people he has been
helping for P9 live. Yesterday while he was recovering he began to receive frantic
messages from Favour, one year old Donald's mother, begging for help. Donald was
sick, they had no food, and the landlord had locked them out of the room where they
had been staying for nonpayent of rent.
Despite his own condition, and despite the fact that he had just had surgery two
days before, John actually made the journey to Accra to help Favour and Donald. He
did what he could for them on such short notice and told them that he would arrange
to pay their debts and to get the child taken care of. Then he returned home to
continue his recovery.
Anyone who questions John's commitment to helping others might ask themselves if
they would have got off a sick bed when they got the call that someone needed them.
This is the kind of thing that makes us proud to work together with John to further
P9 and its mission of helping others.
Hopefully John hasn't set back his own recovery. We wish him the best.
